Obesity in children has been a major issue recently for its rising numbers worldwide. This has been due to many factors but one that is known to be key is about nutrition. Do you know that the consumption of processed foods and high sugar-sweetened beverages as well as high intake in unhealthy foods cannot lead to weight gain only but also obesity in children?

Research has shown that the main cause of childhood obesity is the availability of unhealthy foods both at home and elsewhere. We all know the temptation children face from the fast food restaurants, stores or vending machines that offer foods with low-nutrients and high calories. What amazes me is that these foods are cheaper and easily available in the market than foods such as fruits, vegetables and whole grains.

Another factor that we can all confess to is that children are becoming more and more idle most of the time. Parents have made smartphones tablets and computers accessible to children hence it is rare to see children playing outdoors or even taking part in physical activities. As a result, this lack of physical activity may lead to weight gain or even obesity among children.

What method do you think should be used to fight child obesity? We should encourage children to maintain healthy eating habits and take part in physical activities. Do you agree with me parents should be responsible with ensuring their children only consume healthy foods and in the process avoid unhealthy foods? Weight management is another factor to consider and children should be encouraged to participate in physical activities like cycling.

I think schools could be of help through provision of healthy foods that children eat and providing exercise sessions. The community can also play part by putting programs that encourage healthy eating and physical activities among children and their families. We can all contribute to the fight against child obesity by promoting healthy and active lifestyle.
