The Impact of Social Media on Children
Social media is present in our children’s lives, as it opens their doors to things such as companionship, expression and creativity. Besides that, do you know that it has some risks? Knowledge of these risks may be of tremendous benefit to parents and caregivers or be guiders to safe and healthy experience of the internet.
Did you know that social media has a huge influence on one’s self-esteem? You should teach children against measuring themselves up to perfectly curated images and lifestyles on the internet as it may lead to them feeling unwanted or inducing anxiety. You can agree with me that parents should encourage their children to have discussions of reality as compared to media and the importance of accepting oneself.
There is also problems such as cyberbullying. Did you ever hear that children can imitate others and perform actions that can potentially have aggressive feelings towards victims? Parents should therefore follow what their children are doing on this social media and ensure they make them understand the importance of being kind, and respecting fellow members. To ensure that we have a protective environment children should be encouraged to report cases of bullying.
It is necessary to set the rules regarding sharing information through social networks. Time spent before screens or turning the children into non-technology conformists should be put in place in order to achieve a balanced relation with technology.
I believe it is equally relevant to raise children, explaining to them about the privacy and security. The children should be informed not to divulge so much information about themselves and that personal profiles have consequences of real world. Parents must make sure that they talk to them about how to set very good password as well as how they can avoid being tricked into parting with their money online.
