Promoting Emotional Intelligence

Do you know that emotional Intelligence involves the ability to perceive, understand, and handle our own and others’ emotions? When it comes to the young people, it is a valuable tool in developing resilience, empathy, and proper means of expressing oneself. It is advisable to teach children how to manage their feelings so that they may benefit emotionally and mentally. The good thing about teaching children the ways to control feelings actually helps them with some pretty important life skills.

An effective way to teach emotional intelligence is with open dialogue regarding feelings. Encourage children to express their own feelings through questions like, how did that make you feel? This also encourages putting words to sensations and equalizes the fact that it’s okay to be afraid, sad, or in pain. Providing emotional forums for discussion establishes emotional awareness and acceptance and this has to be the goal towards helping our children.

What do think of modeling emotional regulation? For what I have seen it is very important. Children learn through watching adults hence we should show them how to cope with feelings in a healthy way by for example taking deep breaths or using some kind of positive self-talk during difficult times or problems.
Research has shown that activities that foster empathy further develop emotional intelligence. The role-playing act has been noted to help children put themselves in other people’s places and on how to react. Children ought to read books and stories about emotions that create discussions and provide relatable contexts for understanding feelings.

One thing parent must do is teach problem-solving skills which enables children to handle their emotions appropriately. Children should be encouraged to think critically about situations which bring about strong feelings and come up with solutions. This in return equips the kids with ways of handling conflicts and setbacks in life in a healthy manner.
